What is another name for the embryonic mouth?
StoMoDeum
What type of “derm” are the nasal placodes?
Thickenings of Ectoderm
How are the lateral and medial nasal prominences developed?
The nasal PLACODES invaginate to form NASAL PITS. The nasal pits then THICKEN to form the lateral and medial nasal prominences.
What structures fuse to make the upper lip? What main structure is NOT a part in this?
The medial nasal prominences and the maxillary prominences come together to make the upper lip. The Lateral Nasal Prominences do not take part in forming the upper lip.
What is the origin of the NasoLacrimal Duct?
The nasolacrimal groove forms the nasolacrimal duct
What are the 5 prominences that form the nose?
1.Frontal Prominence (Bridge of Nose) 2&3. Medial Nasal Prominences 4&5. The Lateral Nasal Prominences
What merges to make the triangular Primary Palate?
The medal nasal prominences
What are the 3 parts of the inter maxillary segment? (the merger of the medial nasal prominences)
Incisiors, Philtrum, Primary Palate
What is the landmark between the primary and secondary palates?
The incisive foramen
What are USUALLY the causes to clefts anterior to the incisive foramen?
The lack of fusion of the maxillary prominence with the medial nasal prominence on one or both sides
What is usually the cause for a cleft posterior to the incisive foramen?
Lack of fusion of palatine shelves
What is more frequent? A cleft palate or a cleft lip?
A cleft LIP is more frequent
Which sex is most affected by cleft lip?
Males
