Cleansing, toning, moisturizing, and protecting
The first step of skin care regimens that removes dirt, oil, makeup, and environmental pollutants from the surface of the skin.
Cleansing
Help to further cleanse the skin while properly balancing the pH. They remain on the skin.
Astringents and toners
Skin care products that are used to replenish and balance moisture and oil as well as protect the skin. Also called humectants.
Moisturizers
Protects the skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays.
Sunscreen

Chemical exfoliant

A wide range of masks whose purpose is dependent on their ingredients. Usually calm and soothe sensitive skin to reduce redness and irritation. Some are suited for oily skin.
Gel masks
Masks that are mixed with water and applied in a thick consistency. They dry and harden to rubber like consistencies that can be pulled from the face in one piece. Offer ingredient benefits and also kick in moisture to create a firm, taut feeling.
Modeling masks
This mask hardens as it cools and the warmth of it increases circulation and promotes penetration of nutrients applied beneath it. Best for dry, mature skin
Paraffin masks
A systematic, therapeutic method if manipulating the body by running, pinching, tapping, kneading or striking with the hands.

Manipulation
A light, relaxing, smooth, gentle stroking or circular manipulation. Carried out with the pads of the fingers. Used to begin and end massage treatments.
Effleurage
A light or heavy kneading, pinching, and rolling of the muscles. The most important massage movement. Deeply stimulating.
Petrissage
A form of petrissage that is similar to kneading dough. Generally done on arms and hands.
Fulling
Also known as percussion, a light tapping or slapping movement applied with the fingertips or partly flexed fingers. The most stimulating movement.
Tapotement
A motion that resembles a chopping movement using the edge of the hands.
Hacking
A circular or wringing movement with no gliding, usually performed with the fingertips. Used to move the skin across the muscles and bones below.
Friction
Performed by holding the clients arm in one hand and lifting the skin firmly up and down over the bone with the other hand. Form of friction
