After a pending grant or contract award. OLAW does not accept/process unsolicited applications.
How long are Assurances approved for?
Domestic Assurances - 4 years
Interinstitutional Assurances - Life or grant up to 5 years
Foreign Assurances - Up to 5 years
What institutions receive domestic assurances?
US institutions that control their own animal facilities, conduct animal research on-site, and have an IO, IACUC, and vet with program authority and access to all animals.
What institutions receive interinstitutional assurances?
When an awardee institution does not have its own animal care and use program, facilities to house animals, IACUC, and does not conduct animal research on site. Institution will perform animal activity at a secondary Assured institution names as the performance site.
Which institutions receive a Foreign Assurance?
Those outside the US that control their own animal facilities, conduct research on-site, and have an animal care and use program with an authorized institutional signing official.
How early should the Domestic Assurance renewal document be submitted prior to review?
4 months prior
What changes should be forward to OLAW immediately after an Assurance is approved but before it is renewed?
Changes in IO or IACUC Chair, because OLAW communicates with these institutions.
What must the IACUC, through the IO, report promptly to OLAW?
- Any serious or continuing noncompliance the PHS Policy
- Any serious deviations from the Guide
- Any suspension of an activity by IACUC
How often must IACUC policies be reviewed?
No less than once every 3 years.
Can IACUC-approved policies be used for administrative handling of some sig. changes to the IACUC protocol?
Yes
What changes must be approved via DMR/FCR?
- From nonsurvival to survival
- Resulting in greater pain or distress
- In housing and/or use of animals in a location that is not part of the animal program overseen by IACUC
- In species
- In study objectives
- In PI
- That impact personnel safety
What can VVC apply to? Is this DMR?
a. Anesthesia, analgesia, sedation, or experimental substances
b. Euthanasia to any approved method
c. Duration, frequency, type, or number of procedures performed on an animal
Is not DMR - Vet is serving as a subject matter expert to verify compliance with IACUC-approved VVC policy
