female anatomy test Flashcards
(25 cards)
what are the important functions of the female body?
1) to produce ova (eggs)
2) to produce estrogen and progesterone which are responsible for secondary characteristics
3) to carry the baby and give birth
what are vulva?
external female sex organs
what is mons pubis?
rounded fatty pad of tissue covered with pubic hair that sits on top of the pubic bone
what is clitoris?
sensitive erectile tissue located above the vaginal opening, has no reproductive function
labia minora
thin folds of skin surrounding the opening of the vagina and urethra
labia majora
thicker fold of skin covered with pubic hair
vaginal opening
becomes visible when labia are parted
hymen
Thin mucous membrane partially covering the opening of the vagina.
No Known function.
Not present in all females.
Vagina
muscular, elastic canal that serves as passageway to the uterus (birth canal).
Cervix
lower end or neck of the uterus. Opening between uterus and vagina.
Uterus
muscular, pear shaped organ. Fertilized ovum (egge) implants and grows.
Fallopian Tubes (Oviducts)
A pair of tubes lead from ovary to uterus, Mature ovum released; egg becomes fertilized and travels down these tubes to the uterus.
Ovaries
2 glands on either side of the uterus. Produce female sex hormones, stores/matures reproductive cells (ova). Females are born with all of the eggs they will ever ovulate. Either one may “ovulate.”
Fimbriae
Finger-like projections that sweep the ovum into the oviduct after it is released by an ovary.
what is the inner lining of the uterus called?
The lining of the uterus is called the endometrium.
Menstrual Cycle
Menstruation is the regular monthly shedding of the endometrium.
Average length of the menstrual cycle is 28 days.
Menstruation lasts 3-7 days.
An ovum lives 24 hours.
Unfertilized ova breaks down and releases from the body during menstrual flow.
50-200 ml of blood and tissue is discharged during the menstruation period.
what are the 3 menstruation phases in order?
1) flow phase
2) follicular phase
3) corpus luteum phase
what is the flow phase?
Flow Phase occurs if pregnaucy does not happen, the uterine lining is discharged.
Fluid shed is a mixture of blood, tissue, mucus, and cells.
what is the Follicular Phase?
Hormones begin repairing the endometrium (the lining of the uterus) & lining begins to thicken in preparation for implantation of the fertilized ovum.
Ova are growing and maturing in the ovaries during this time.
what is the corpus luteum phase?
Corpus Luteum Phase begins as soon as an egg is released.
Progesterone increases blood supply to the endometrium and the uterine lining thickens.
If an ovum (egg) is NOT fertilized it is released from the body during the flow phase and the cycle starts over.
when does ovulation occur?
Ovulation takes place around the midpoint of the cycle (day 14 of a 28 day cycle).
when does pregnancy occur?
Pregnancy can occur if sperm are present any time the egg has been ovulated.
what is painful menstruation called?
Painful menstruation is called dysmenorrhea.
what is menopause and when does it occur?
Menopause is when the function of ovaries decreases with age. It occurs usually around age 40’s to mid-50’s.
