male anatomy test Flashcards
(21 cards)
what are the main functions for males?
- To produce reproductive cell (produce, maintain & transport sperm) & protection fluid (semen).
- To produce male hormone, testosterone, which is responsible for secondary sex characteristics such as Facial hair, pubic hair, underarm hair, deep voice, muscle dev.
what do the testes do?
Testes manufacture sperm & secrete testosterone.
where is sperm produced?
Sperm is produced in the Seminiferous Tubules.
where is testosterone produced?
Testosterone is produced in the Interstitial Cells.
what is the scrotum?
- The sac that encloses testicles & epididymis outside the body.
- Helps protect the testicles.
- Regulates temperature to help keep sperm alive (3-4 deg below body temp).
where is sperm stored and matured in?
Sperm stored & matures in the Epididymis. It takes 96 days until it’s mobile.
what does the vas deferens do with the sperm?
The vas deferens carries sperm from the epididymis to the urethra.
*A vasectomy, deals with the snipping of the vas deferens.
when do males start to produce sperm?
Males begin producing sperm at puberty.
sperm facts
- 200-300 million sperm are produced daily.
- Sperm can live 6-8 hours in the vagina.
- Sperm can live 3-5 days in the uterus
- Takes 1-1 ½ hours for sperm to reach fallopian tubes.
what are the 3 glands that make up ejaculatory fluid
1) Seminal Vesicle
2) Prostate Gland
3) Bulbourethral Glands or Cowper’s Gland
what does the seminal vesicle do?
2 glands that secrete fluids that provides nourishment to the sperm.
what does the prostate gland do?
secretes a fluid to mix with sperm. Neutralizes the acidity of the vagina so sperm can live (protects sperm).
what does the Bulbourethral Glands or Cowper’s Gland do?
2 pea size glands that open into the urethra & secrete a clear, sticky fluid.
Lubricates the urethra to allow easy passage of semen (contains sperm).
when do erections happen?
Erections happen when veins & spongy tissue in the penis fill with blood.
what causes erections?
- Sexual excitement/stimulation
- Tension in the pelvic muscles
- Irritation of the penis (tight pants)
- Full bladder
when does ejaculation happen?
Ejaculation occurs when muscles in an erect penis contract & force semen out of the penis.
what does the urethra do?
- Tube that carries semen or urine out of the body.
- A sphincter closes the opening to the bladder when semen leaves the body so urine & semen never pass through the urethra at the same time.
how much sperm makes up the ejaculatory fluid (%)?
Sperm makes up less than 2% of the ejaculatory fluid.
how long does it take for a male to make the same amount of sperm contained in the average ejaculate?
It takes the average male 24 hours to make the same amount of sperm contained in the average ejaculate.
what are 3 ways that semen is forced out of the penis?
- Sexual Intercourse
- Nocturnal emissions occur when a male becomes secually stimulated & ejaculates in his sleep
- Sexual self stimulation which often leads to climax is masturbation
what is foreskin?
The flap of skin that covers the end of the penis. It may be removed by surgery called circumcision.
