Ovary
organ that produces eggs
Name the 2 tissues that cover the outside of the ovary
- Germinal Epithelium: outer layer
- Tunica Albuginea: inner layer
Uterine Tubes
transports secondary oocytes (immature eggs) from the ovaries to the uterus
-fertilization occurs here
Name what the uterine tube walls consist of
- Serosa: outside of uterine tube
- Middle Muscularis: 2 layers of smooth muscle that contract to push the oocyte forward
- Inner Mucosa: secretory cells that lube the tube and nourish oocyte
Uterus
hollow organ where fetus develops
Cervix
region at bottom of the uterus that leads to vagina
Vagina
passageway for newborn and where semen is deposited
Vulvae
makes up external genitalia
Oogenesis
production of eggs in females via meiosis
-primary oocytes go through meiosis but division only makes it to prophase I -> remain there until puberty
How many phases is Ovarian Cycle made of?
3 Phases
1. Follicular Phase
2. Ovulation
3. Luteal Phase
Follicular Phase
development of the follicle
Ovulation Phase
occurs mid-cycle, ejection of the egg from ovary
Luteal Phase
secretion of the eggs from the corpus luteum after ovulation to create uterine wall for egg to develop
Menstrual Cycle consists of how many phases?
3 phases
1. Proliferation Cycle
2. Secretory Phase
3. Menstrual Phase
Proliferation Cycle
thickening of endometrium because tissue lost during menstruation
Secretory phase
vascularization of endometrium to prepare for implantation of egg
Menstrual Phase
shedding of endometrium when implantation does not occur
