Male Reproductive System Flashcards
(16 cards)
Scrotum
sac of skin and fascia that hangs from base of penis
-divided into 2 compartments, each holds a teste
Testes
male organ that produces sperm
Epididymis
organ that lies next to testis
-sperm is stored here after maturation
Ductus Deferens
tube in which sperm travel once leave epididymis
Ejaculatory ducts
short tubes that connect the ductus deferens to the urethra
Urethra
passageway for urine to semen
Spermatic cord
connects each testis to the body cavity
Accessory sex glands
help transport sperm by secreting substaces
Penis
organ that passes urine and delivers sperm
Spermatogonia
cells nearest the basement membrane that line the walls of the seminiferous tubes
What kind of cells are spermatogonia
stem cells - they can continuously divide without maturing into specialized cells
Where do sperm cells (mature) go after spermatogonia
toward the lumen
Spermatogenesis
process that begins with spermatogonia and ends with the production of sperm.
How long does the production cycle take?
from spermatogonia to full on sperm - 64 days
-new cycle starts every 16 days
How does the process begin
With mitosis because the cells are diploid (2 nucleus)
What are mature gametes
-haploid (1 nucleus)
-these cells must undergo another cell division through meiosis
