(9 cards)
What are fertilisers?
-They increase the amount of key nutrients in the soil for crop plants, meaning they will grow larger and healthier
What are examples of organic fertilisers?
Manure and compost
What minerals do fertilisers supply plants with?
-Nitrogen
-Phosphorous
-Potassium
What does Nitrogen do in plants?
-They are absorbed in the form of nitrates
-They are needed to make amino acids
What would a nitrogen deficiency look like in plants?
Causes stunted growth and yellowing of leaves
What does phosphorous do in plants?
-Absorbed in the form of phosphates
-Needed to make DNA and Cell membranes
What could a phosphorous deficiency look like in plants?
Poor root growth and discolored leaves
What does potassium do in plants?
-Absorbed in forms of various compounds of potassium
-Allows enzyme reactions to take place in both respiration and photosynthesis
What does a potassium deficiency look like in plants?
-Poor growth of flowers and fruits
-Brown spots of leaves
