Pest control Flashcards
(6 cards)
What are some examples of pesticides?
-Insecticides
-Herbicides
-Fungicides
What are the advantages of pesticides?
-Easily accessible and relatively cheap
-Has an immediate effect
-Kills the entire population of pests
What are the disadvantages of pesticides?
-Organisms they are meant to kill can develop resistances to the pesticide
-They are non species specific and can kill beneficial organisms
-They need to be repeatedly applied
What is biological control?
Involves using a natural predator to eat the pest species
What are the advantages of biological control?
-It is a natural method, thus it doesn’t cause pollution
-The prey can develop no resistance
-Can target specific species
-Long lasting
-Does not need to be repeatedly applied
What are the disadvantages of biological control?
-May eat other organisms instead of the pest
-Takes a longer period of time to be effective
-Cannot kill the entire population, some pests will always be present
-May not adapt to the environment and might move out of it
-May become a pest itself
