Fetal Testing Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is the purpose of the Nonstress test (NST)?
allows the physician to check for fetal well-being
What is defined as a reactive NST?
2 or more accelerations within 30 minutes of fetal heart rate tracing
What is defined as an acceleration on a NST?
abrupt increase of 15 bpm or greater above baseline with onset to peak time of <30 seconds
What does a reactive NST indicate?
adequate fetal oxygenation
What could a nonreactive NST mean?
The baby is sleeping
What is done to try and wake the baby after a nonreactive NST?
Vibroacoustic stimulation
What does a Biophysical Profile (BPP) consist of?
Reactive NST
Fetal breathing: episodes of expansion
Fetal movement: count fetal movements
Fetal muscle tone
Amniotic fluid index
Each category is worth 2 points: BPP 4 or less may indicate fetal compromise
What BPP score may indicate fetal compromise?
4 or less
What is normal fetal breathing for BPP?
Count # of chest expansions: 1 or more episode 30 seconds or more within a 30 minute time period
What is normal fetal movement for BPP?
Count fetal movements; >3 in 30 minutes
What is normal fetal muscle tone for BPP?
1 or more episode of flexion and extension of extremity within 30 minutes
