What was the coastal enquiry question
To what extent is geology a factor in shaping the change/ formation of the North Antrim Coast?
Hypothesis & sub-hypothesis
Geology is the most important factor
- Sphericity will be highest with low resistant rock
- Formations will be more diverse —> high resistant
- **Kemphs phrase ** —> Same across coast
- Cliff degradation —> high with landward dip
How did we measure roundness of pebbles
Krumbein’s index
- measured and calculated different pebbles roundness —> indicates erosion
Pros:- quantitative
- accurate
- compares. How rock type influences level of erosion/ roundness
Cons:
- Time
- calculations
How did we measure the levels of geodiversity and factors
Geo diversity score: Scored sea-level, sediment and land-use
Pros:
- Allowee us to understand how geology impacts what can be done on land
- How other factors impact geology in different areas
Cons:
- subjective
- Hard to identify all sediment
How was cliff degredation measured?
Cliff degradation& vegetation scores: Scored this on levels of stability at locations
Pros:
- Comparable
- Easy to do
Cons:
- Subjective
- Assuming vegetations always helps
- secondary data on cliff dip needed
Kemps phase definition
- difference between swash time and backwash time
How did we calculate how marine processes can impact the coast?
Kemps phase test: counted how many waves broke on the shore and timed swash & backwash times. Averaged out.
Pros:
- comparable with data over time
- more definitive answer in destructivity of waves
Cons:
- Time
- equation needed
How did we evaluate intervention/management
Bi-polar management: rated different criteria on management and coastal defences.
Pros:
- Allows us to understand perception
- comparable
- wide range of criteria
Cons:
- subjective
Flood risk method
Flood-risk survey: uses indicators on severity*likelihood of a flood
- measures: Heigh of defence, defences, vulnerability of services
Pros:
- Quantitative
- accounts for multiple factors
Cons:
- Time
- Hard to assign values to land-use
