Fight Or Flight Flashcards
(4 cards)
What are the 5 steps of the fight or flight response
1-stressor perceived
2-hypothalamus activates the pituitary gland which changes the ANS from its resting parasympathetic state by increasing activity in the sympathetic nervous system
3-adrenaline is released by the adrenal medulla into the bloodstream-fight or flight-digestion stops, heart rate increases
4-stressor passes, increasing activity in parasympathetic nervous system and releasing noradrenaline from the adrenal medulla-rest and digest-blood pressure decreased, digestion starts
5-Homeostasis is maintained
Gender bias
-Typically tested on male mice
-Taylor found that women are more likely to tend and befriend
Maladaptive to modern day
-Useful survival mechanism for ancestors but now society is much safer
-increases cardiovascular risk and unnecessary stress
Limited explanation
-Psychologists suggest that humans also experience a freeze response since our first response is to avoid confrontation so we freeze to become hyper vigilant
