Split Brain Lateralisation Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is a split brain patient
People who split their corpus colosseum due to their epilepsy, means that the sides can’t communicate with eachother
What is the corpus collosum
The tissue that divides the hemispheres, allowing them to communicate with each other using electrical impulses
Who researched split brains
Sperry
Who were Sperry’s participants
11 split brain patients
What was Sperry’s touch procedure
-Patients stare at a dot in the centre of the screen
-They then have a word or object flash up for 0.1 seconds in either their left or right visual fields
-They were then asked to pick up the object with the other hand or same hand
Sperry’s touch findings
LVF - pick up with right hand
LVF - couldn’t pick up with right hand
RVF - couldn’t pick up with right hand
RVF - could pick up with left hand
Sperry’s speech procedure
-Look at a dot in the middle of the screen
-Have an image/word flash in the left or right visual field
-Pick up the object using the left/right hand
-say what the object is
Cause and effect - confounding variables
-Sperry’s split brain patients were a unique case that were then compared to a neurotypical control group which didn’t have the same results
-Epilepsy may be the cause of these symptoms due to brain damage after excessive seizures
-More valid to use epilepsy patients in control group
Methodological issues - Tasks lack mundane realism
-You’ll always use both sides of your brain in real life
-Even split brain patients can correlate information from both cortexes in real time
Research support
Gazzaniga
-split brain patients perform better than control groups and are faster at identifying the odd object out in an array of objects
-Supports theory that the left and right brain are separate since the left hemisphere has better cognitive strategies
Extra PEELs
Standardized procedure
