Final Flashcards
(21 cards)
What is homeostasis?
The body’s ability to maintain a balanced internal environment in a changing environment
What is a stimulus?
Change in the environment that causes a living organism to respond
What is a receptor?
Cells or tissue that detect change
What is an effector?
Receives information from the brain to carry out changes
What is a response?
An action done in response to a signal
What is a negative feedback loop?
A response to the stimulus that reduces/goes against it
Examples of negative feedback loops:
- Body temperature and blood glucose regulation
What is a positive feedback loop?
A response to the stimulus that increases/enhances it
Examples of positive feedback loops:
- Childbirth contractions
- Blood clotting
What is a Biosphere?
A part of Earth where life exists
What is Matter?
Something that occupies space and has mass
What is Energy?
The ability to do something. It cannot be created or destroyed
What is a Food Chain?
A single pathway that shows how food flows through organisms in an ecosystem
What is a Food Web?
All of the food chains in an Ecosystem
What is an Ecosystem?
Area where living organisms interact with each other and their environment
What is a producer also known as?
Autotroph
What is a producer/autotroph?
An organism that makes their own food
What is a consumer also known as?
Heterotroph
What is a decomposer?
Organism that breaks down decaying organisms and waste
What is the Carbon Cycle?
The movement of carbon between the atmosphere, oceans, land, and living organisms
