Civil Rights Act of 1964

A
  • During John Kennedy’s term the end of Jim Crow laws had come. He was a democrat.
  • After WWII, debate over what were America’s true intentions were becoming a big issue, it was Economic rights vs.general freedom. There was discrimination that made America seem against their own word of “freedom” aiming towards employment.
  • So this act prohibits racial discrimination in employment in public institutions but because it was only directed towards public it still had limits that people made reason to discriminate still towards private institutions and so the Voting Acts Right was passed. This lead to movements of other races such as Latino and Native American as well as rights for women. The significance of rights for all kinds of people.

Radical Republicans

A
  • During the Reconstruction Era (1860’s- late 1870’s)
  • This was after the Civil War ends where half of the Nation wanted “peace” but the other wanted to remake and create equality. They were a small group of Senators who were abolitionists remaking the Nation by making blacks and whites equal. Unlike most Republicans wanted to punish the South. They convinced Moderates to be Radical with passion and emotion.
  • They take control but made Americans angry. They wanted to amend the Constitution; the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendment. This eventually led to the failure of the Radical Republicans plan and goes from equality back to discrimination.

Q

A. Philip Randolph

A
  • Born in 1889
  • During WWII(1940’s), there were new jobs but there was still much discrimination against black. These new jobs that were created would pay black men less than white men, even though black men were serving and sacrificing to show that they are part of a great nation and deserve to be treated equally.
  • Randolph organized a march on Washington, because of this it would embarrass America and show who they really are and what they are fighting for in WWII is for nothing. Roosevelt responds w/ Executive Order 8802 in 1941 that in every factory the gov was making jeeps and tanks every worker must be paid the same and so the march never occurred.
  • This was significant because it would soon lead to debates and contradictions of America and lead to rebellion. Eventually a march did happen on washington with MLK with Randolph next to him.
