Workingmen’s Parties
> considered “problem watchers”
organized between 1820’s and 1830’s and the very first labor unions
created during industrialization and the market revolution which poor living conditions and the cities growing at the same time but services needed were not adapting to the growing cities.created to remedy these problems, their idea was to reform the revolution not repeal.
main goals were free public schools, believed people needed education, end imprisonment for debt calling for a 10 hour work day to pay those debts off, law to help employers from being bankrupt and improve living conditions and wages
Stamp Act
> Act created for colonies in (1765)
Created after the Seven Years’ War which England won but ended up in debt and needed ways to gain some money to pay the French back and keep themselves stable.
The act created taxes to finance the empire which the King and legislature imposed. It deprived the 13 colonies of all their liberty and first time ever to unite them.
Pueblo Revolt of 1680
> In Santa Fe, which was owned by Spanish but mostly populated by the Pueblo Natives.
The Spanish whipped the Pueblo leader to force power against the natives to convert to Catholicism, soon enough the Pueblo leader led a rebellion to expel the Spanish after. They win. Eventually
Industrial Morality
> (1820’s-30’s)
As the industrial revolution is building, a new sense of culture developed. As well as a period of a religious movement –> Second Great Awakening. (God is noble to all of us)
You had to make a moral choice whether it be good or bad, this emphasized free will that have consequences or improve life on earth and the afterlife.
Mainly significant to the fact that it impacted laborers to work soberly and be more appropriate in representing the new industrialization. It was a sin to drink, this also creating a Temperance society meaning hard work = being rewarded.
King Philips War
> Occurred in New England in 1675
A war between the Natives and English settlers in hope of driving out the English settlers. Tension which had been growing since the 1600’s for the natives to turn to english settlers side which they had become very dependent on their goods after natives goods have been taken away from the settlers. Other tribes were involved.
Bacons Rebellion
> Occurred in Virginia 1676
Lead by Nathaniel Bacon who was very wealthy but what he wanted the most was to be governor. So he created a war that would cause a blame towards his current governor and he would be pulled out from the position. Involved indentured servants that pushed out the frontier which would cause Natives to retaliate. Made the indentured servants believe that they deserved land because they were white male.
This escalates from indentured servants to slavery by taking land and giving it to the white male.
Ecological Imperialsim
> 1500’s-1700’s
This was mainly the idea about plants, animals, and the diseases which the europeans first brought were the successful factors of the native over rulings through the 15 and 1700’s even though most settlers believed it was god who was giving reason as to why natives were not worthy to be considered people.
This became a huge factor of the underlying truth behind the real first founders of the Americas.
Alien and Sedition Acts
> 1798 within the U.S.
After Washington’s term, John Adams became the new president but was not very much liked. Last Fed. president. John was tired of all the criticism and created an act that would silence anyone who exercised the bill of rights. John had different beliefs as to the bill of rights.
Led to Election of 1800 where Thomas Jefferson ran against John and won. (considered 2nd American Rev.)
John Locke
> Born 1632-1704. Founder of Liberalism; during what was also known as the scientific revolution during the 1680’s.
Published “Two Treaties on Gov.” (Fundamental truths)
Locke believed people were born already free, towards all of humanity, focusing on individualism. Unlike republicans Locke believed people had “natural rights” life, liberty, property. Republicans believed this towards free English white men.
This follows through history by the time John Adam become president and Thomas Jefferson who was an anti-fed had the same beliefs.
Bill of Rights
> Written by James Madison, ratification of the Constitution between Federalists and Anti-feds to protect individual liberty.
Virginia were the last to ratify the amendment in 1791
list of limits that the power the gov can uphold.
Nat Turner
> Born 1800-1831
Part of the slave culture and cotton kingdom
He led a rebellion in Virginia in 1831 same year he died against white slave owners. He was inspired through religion, that he was the true messiah and that a fight between goods vs evil would end all evil.
Turner was looked as a hero and Southerners soon feared that this would give slaves a reason to fight and so prevented slaves to read and write.
Anthony Burns
> Born 1834-1862, Virginia
He was one of the 157 slaves who escaped after the Fugitive Slave Act was passed, in 1853. He was caught the next year and ordered to be sent back to his owner but due to abolitionists, they stormed out and protested so he would not go back. Soon Burns did return to his owner but his owner saw him as a society figure and was sold and freed making his way to Canada to live his life and be a minister but dies at 28.
