Good death or painless
Euthanasia- involuntary
When person doesn’t want to die but dies peacefully
Ex. Death by lethal injection
Euthanasia- non voluntary
Don’t have ability to say yes or no
Product of not being able to control your own life
Ex. Life support or putting your pet down
Euthanasia- voluntary
Willing to die and it happens peacefully
Ex. Death by dignity
Euthanasia- voluntary
Active v passive
Active- deciding your own fate
Passive- having your fate decided for you
DWD Act requirements
18 or older Citizen of state that allows it Not clinically disturbed (ie depression) Have a prognosis of 6 mon. or less Durable request
Morality claims of suicide- autonomy
You have control over your own life
Ex. How,when, and where you die
Allows you to die with more dignity
Morality claims of suicide- utility
Utilitarianism claim
DWD would reduce all sufferings
Create more good than bad
Ex. You can die with dignity and your family doesn’t have to watch you suffer from an illness and wither away
Morality claims of suicide- argument from consistency
If voluntary passive euthanasia is ok
Then we should accept passive voluntary euthanasia
By both are so similar
Ex. Vaco v quill 1997 Supreme Court case
Immoral claims of suicide- suicide objection
DWD involves suicide
And technically suicide is immoral
So DWD is also wrong bc it violates dignity
*depends on if involved in suicide and moral status of that action
Immoral claims of suicide- no autonomy
Ending your own life early will always fall short of autonomy
Autonomy is comprised by outside pressure
Ex. Financial burden
You end your life bc of someone else’s wellbeing. Not you own
Immoral claims of suicide- autonomy
Have to convince that reasons are not cohersive
Velleman- states opinion alone is cohersive
Immoral claims of suicide- DWD violates moral med
Violates oath
Action redefines the meaning of the practice of medicine
No clear interpretation if it benefits ppl or not
If violates oath you break social contract
Considered morally wrong
Immoral claims of suicide- slippery slope
If allow DWD evolve o unacceptable outcomes
Ex. If you cheat once you will continue to do worse things, therefore don’t cheat in the first place
Immoral claims of suicide-slippery slope response
Not all slopes are that slippery
Or say you do end up doing a worse action…but that action by itself isn’t that serious/ bad
Consequentialist theory- ethical egoism
Selfishness is a virtue and a moral duty
Ayn rand
Women advocate for ethical egoism in moral theory
Advocate for libertarianism in political theory
Objects against self sac. As a moral requirement.( disagrees with Kant )
Ethical egoism- Too demanding objection against utilitarianism ( no rest objection )
Every time want o fulfill your wants you feel guilty bc always be someone else needs it more
Ex. Sandwich example
Ethical egoism- open question argument
Self sacrifice is not unversalizable
Ppl are always benefitting bc they get it back later
Or ex. Sunglasses
Sunglasses always moving therefore no one gets to enjoy them
Morality of ethical egoism
Advocate greatest happiness of self
Even if it hurts o/
Bc benefits self in long run
Cons of ethical egoism
Violates impartiality requir.
Not everyone’s interests are equal
Biased towards ones welfare over others
Ethical egoism and difference with altruism
Helping others is morally right IF it benefits you
Ethical egoism and altruism- self serving v self sacrificial
Self serving- ex.
Eagle mount
It makes you feel good and you benefit from it
Self sacrificial- something you don’t benefit from but you do it anyway
Ex. Math Tutor
Ethical egoism ex. Claim- taxation
EE- if wealthy don’t want to donate they are not obligated to
( doesn’t benefit themselves)
V
Universalization- it’s morally wrong not to donate bc it creates an overall good
