Culture
Totality of socially transmitted pattern of thoughts, values, meanings, and beliefs.
Culture
Refers to the cumulative deposit of knowledge, experience, beliefs, values, attitudes, meanings, hierarchies, religion, notions of time, roles, spatial relations, concepts of the universe, and material objects and possessions acquired by a group of people in the course of generations through individual and group striving.
Beliefs
Something that is accepted, considered to be true, or held as an opinion.
Cultural beliefs
Are beliefs that are learned and shared across groups of people. Because the amount of information in a culture is too large for any one individual to master, individuals know different subsets of the cultural knowledge and thus can vary in their cultural competence.
Superstition
Is a belief or practice typically resulting from ignorance, a misunderstanding of science or causality, a belief in fate or magic, perceived supernatural influence, or fear of that which is unknown.
Hospitality
One of the most popular qualities of Filipinos. Foreigners who have gone to the Philippines find themselves falling in love with the warm hospitality they are shown.
Respect
Often observed—not just by younger people—but also by people of all ages.
Strong family ties
Filipinos value their families so much that they tend to keep families intact through the generations.
Generosity and helpfulness
Filipinos are generous people. Even when we have very little, we always share with those around us.
Strong work ethic
Filipinos are hardworking people to the point that they are willing to work almost the whole day just to feed their families.
Love and caring
Filipinos are the sweetest and most loving people in the world.
Usog
Belief that an infant may feel unwell either by greeting the baby or simply by being overly fond of him or her when meeting the child for the first time.
Pasma
Belief that washing hands or taking a bath after labor-intensive activity causes spasmodic hands or illness.
Bangungot
Phenomenon where the soul goes out from the body and wanders; having nightmares after a heavy meal may result in death.
Concept of Balance (Timbang)
Health is thought to be a result of balance, while illness due to humoral pathology and stress is usually the result of some imbalance.
Mystical causes
Often attributed to experiences or behaviors such as ancestral retribution for unfinished tasks or obligations.
Personalistic causes
Associated with social punishment or retribution from supernatural forces such as evil spirit, witch (manga ga mud) or sorcerer (mangkukulam).
Naturalistic causes
Include a host of factors ranging from natural forces (thunder, lightning, drafts, etc.) to excessive stress, food and drug incompatibility, infection, or familial susceptibility.
Herbularyo
Witch doctors or traditional healers who are asked to counteract evil forces.
Anting-anting
Religious objects, amulets or talismans used for protection.
Response to illness
Filipino older adults tend to cope with illness with the help of family and friends, and by faith in God.
Tiyaga (Patience and Endurance)
The ability to tolerate uncertain situations.
Lakas ng loob (Flexibility)
Being respectful and honest with oneself.
Tatawanan ang problema (Humor)
The capacity to laugh at oneself in times of adversity.
