Define frame or receiver

A

Part of a firearm which provides housing for the hammer, bolt or breechblock, and firing mechanism, and which is usually threaded at its forward portion to receive the barrel. In firearms terminology the term receiver is used with long guns and frame used with handguns

A

Component part of the firing mechanism which gives impulse to the firing pin or primer

A

Part of a firearm mechanism which is moved manually to cause the firearm to discharge

Define trigger guard

A

Rigid loop which partially surrounds the trigger and intended to prevent accidental discharge or damage to the trigger.

A

Rotating part of the revolver that contains the chamber

A

Component part attached to and reciprocating with the breechblock. Typically associated with autoloading pistols.

Define bolt/breechblock

A

Part of a firearm which pushed a cartridge into the chamber and provides for the locking of the action and support of the cartridge. Provides the mechanical function for chambering and extraction of the round of ammunition. In some designs may also serve to eject the cartridge case.

A

In handguns, that portion of the firearm which is held by the shooting hand. In long guns, that portion of the stock to the rear of the trigger.

A

The forward part of a two piece stock which is generally held by the supporting or non-shooting hand.

Define handguard

A

A wooden, plastic, or metal type of forend/forearm that generally encircles the forward portion of the barrel to protect the hand from heat when firing.

Define shoulder stock/butt stock

A

That portion of the long Gun, from the rear of the receiver to the butt, which is held to the shoulder when firing.

Define safeties

A

Can be generally divided into subtypes such as internal safeties (which typically do not receive input from the user) and external safeties (which typically allow the user to give input, for example, toggling a lever for on to off or something similar). Sometimes these are called passive and active safeties (automatic and manual), respectively.

Define disconnector

A

Internal safety for disengaging the trigger from the sear in the firing mechanism of a repeating firearm in order to ensure that only one cartridge is fired each time the trigger is pulled by rendering the trigger inoperative unless it has been released after a cartridge has been chambered.
