What are proofmarks?
The official examination (by the proof firing) of a small arm to prove the stability and functional reliability of that firearm.
Proving of a firearm is done by firing a proof load developing higher pressure than that of the load normally used so there will be a margin of strength in the arm and, consequently, a measure of safety for the user.
Proof marks are stamped into a firearm to prove that such firearm successfully passed such testing.
What do European countries have regarding proof marks?
National legislative regulations concerning the testing (proofing )of firearms
Does the US have these same regulations?
No, US does not have legislative regulations concerning proof testing of firearms, however, most major manufacturers conduct their own proof testing and stamp their firearms with their own “in house” proof mark.
What are the two things imported firearms must be marked in part with?
Importers name and the city and state of the importer.
NOTE: imported firearms may be frequently makes with an abbreviation of the importers name, city and state.
