What is the order of operations when dealing with first aid incidents?
- Deal with Danger

What are the main dangers following a crash?
Further collisions and fires.
What should you watch out for when approaching a collision?
Broken glass or spilt oil.
Should you switch your engine off when attending a crash?
Yes
Should you stop people from smoking when near a crash?
Yes
Should you put on your hazard warning lights when approaching a crash?
Yes
What do you need to know when calling emergency services for an incident?
The exact location including direction of traffic, and the number of vehicles involved.
Should you move casualties from their vehicles?
No. Do not.
Should you remove a motorcyclists helmet?
No. Do not.
How do you help people involved in a crash?
Give them reassurance. Try not to keep them alone. Do try to keep them warm.
Should you give patients food or drink?
No. Do not.
What does the acronym DRABC stand for?
D- Danger
R- response
A- airways
B- breathing
C- circulation
What does danger mean?
Check it’s safe to approach
What does response mean?
Try to get a response and check for injuries. Ask out loud “are you alright?”
How should you check someone’s airway?
Open their airway by placing fingers under their chin and lifting it forward.
What should you do if the patient is unconscious and breathing?
Place them in the recovery position and wait for help.
How do you check breathing?
Look for chest movements, look and listen for breathing, feel breath on your cheek
What should you do if there are no signs of breathing?
Begin CPR
How do you perform CPR?
Interlock your fingers, place on centre of chest. Press down hard and fast. 5 or 6 cm deep and about 2 times per second.
How do you perform CPR on children?
One hand for a child and use two middle fingers for infants, pressing down a third of the chest depth.
When should you stop CPR?
When the patient is breathing again or emergency services take over.
Should you protect yourself from blood from a patient?
Yes
Should you remove items from wounds?
No
What to do when someone is bleeding?
Apply firm pressure over the wound with the cleanest material available. If glass, build up passing either side of wound.
