What are embankments?
Embankments are quite expensive because it is hard engineering. They look quite attractive and they hold the water in place as they make the river deeper and it protects the water flooding. However it can not protect those who live down stream. Embankments are good because it can stop the flooding.
What are afforestation?
Afforestation is not expensive because it is a natural way from preventing floods in that area. Also they are trees that are replanted because it can intercept the water and catch it before it can start a flood. It is quite attractive however the water could be stronger and move the trees around. It would also be harder to catch a lot of rain fall.
What are flood walls?
Flood walls are expensive because it is hard engineering however it is quite attractive. It can also stop the water from overflowing and it can prevent floods. It would protect too much water from escaping and building up to create a flood. However, it would block the view of the river.
What are dams?
Dams are very expensive but they look attractive. They are hard engineering however it is able to store and trap water . Also it can create electricity also preventing floods. However it can destroy animals and it is very affective. It can also make people homeless which means that they would loose their home for a flood defence.
What are land use zoning?
Land use zoning is not expensive and it is soft engineering. It is quite attractive and it is different land that is far away from homes. However there are not any other buildings there and another river near the houses could flood. However this would mean that although this would prevent floods most of the buildings would not be near it and it would not affects them.
What are storage areas?
Storage areas are quite expensive and it is hard engineering. The water from the river is pumped into the sea which would mean that less water could create a flood over the land. This is a way of storing water when it can over flow and moving it to the sea. However it is not attractive and less space can be used from the river because more water would be moved to the sea.
What are wash lands?
Wash lands are attractive and not expensive. It is soft engineering and the water can over flow however it can not travel to the buildings and the houses which means that they are protected. However when there is not a flood then sports activities are played however when there is a flood then there is no space for them. Also there would not be any space for nature reserves if it gets flooded.
What is straightening and deepening the river?
Straightening and deepening the river is very expensive and it is hard engineering. It is also attractive and it moves the water because it would not build up and flood. Also it moves fast because then the water would not overflow. However when the water moves further down the river the water builds up and floods. Also when the water gets there it is not continued as a channel.
