Fluid Therapy Flashcards
(23 cards)
Are SQ fluids reliable in a dehydrated animal?
probably not, because dehydration causes peripheral vasoconstriction
What kind of fluids can you give SQ?
only isotonic
When can you not do oral fluids?
vomiting, esophageal disease, aspiration pneumonia, shock
What indicated SQ fluids no being absorbed?
SQ edema ventral to injection site at 6-8 hours post SQ
What size needle should you use for SQ fluids?
16-22 ga, 18-20g for dog/cat
Amount per site for SQ?
15ml/# max (ACT video)
How much SQ can cat take?
10-20 ml/kg/site
How much SQ can a large dog take?
tolerate ~200ml/site
Is it best to use one site for SQ fluids?
yes
With critical fluids, how much should you be prepared to give?
whole blood volume per hour.
What PCV indicates a need for transfusion?
less than 20%
What TP indicates a need for a transfusion?
less than 50% of starting value
How do you calculate dehydration replacement volume?
% x weight in lbs x 454 ml/lb = ml lost, then multiply by 0.8!
What is normal daily maintenance?
30 ml/#
How do you calculate for fever loss?
Maintenance x 10% x amount of fever/1.8
How do you calculate drops/min?
total infusion volume x drops/ml // total infusion time in mins
3 types of fluid compartments.
intravasular, intracellular, extracellular
3 basic types of fluids
dextrose, crystalloid, colloid
How much of a crystalloid stay in the intravascular space?
25%
What is the primary purpose of colloid fluids?
expand plasma volume, promote peripheral blood flow
What is dextrans?
synthetic colloids
How long is frozen plasma stable for?
2-5 years
What is not effective after storing whole blood for 24 hours?
platelets
