What’s involved in the UK disability legislation?
Covered by the Equality Act 2010:
CC need to anticipate the needs of disabled PAX
What’s involved in the EU disability legislation?
It’s the responsibility of airport operators to assist any disabled PAX whilst in the airport.
Must give airport authorities 36hrs notice for assistance.
What’s involved in the US disability legislation?
(Flights to and from the US)
- Inform PAX which seats have lifting armrests
- Stowing at least one collapsable wheelchair in the cabin
- Ensuring visually and hearing impaired PAX have access to same info as other PAX (e.g. delays)
Who resolves disability-related complaints?
Complaints Resolution Official (CRO)
WCHR:
PAX can manage steps and short walking distances, may require a wheelchair to a/c.
WCHS:
PAX cannot manage steps but can walk down cabin, requires lift.
NNBH:
PAX has fused leg and cannot bend knee
WCHC:
PAX is completely immobile, requires lift and cabin chair
PETC:
PAX travelling with assistance dog
BLND:
PAX is blind or visually impaired
DEAF:
PAX is deaf or hearing impaired
DPNA:
PAX has intellectual or development disability
DSAB{:
PAX requires specific seat (e.g. near the toilet or their interpreter)
What’s the procedure with motorised wheelchairs/mobility scooters?
You must ask the dimensions, weight and type of battery. Some batteries need to be removed.
What’s the procedure for assistance dogs?
Both countries routing must be in the Pet Travel Scheme and an extra seat is blocked for the dog at no extra cost.
When is a companion required for a disabled PAX to fly?
If the PAX cannot:
- lift themselves
- reach an exit unaided
- communicate with the CC on safety matters
- fasten and unfasten seatbelt
- retrieve and fit LJ
- fit oxygen mask
