folding and faulting Flashcards
what is a fold
A bend or curve in the rocks of the Earth’s crust
define compression
When two continental plates collide, land is forced or folded upwards through the process of Compression
explain the difference between the lithosphere and asthenosphere
The lithosphere compreises of the solid upper mantle and crust. whereas the asthenoshphere comprises of the most upper part of the liquid lower mantle
what is menat by oregency
Refers to mountain building processes. This occurs due to tectonic movements that causes plates to buckle upwards, forming fold mountains.
what is a fault
A crack or fracture in the Earth’s crust
what is a limb
the sides of the fold
what is a simple fold
Simple Fold: This fold has two limbs of equal steepness
what is an assymetrical fold
: One limb is steeper than the other in this fold because greater compression is applied to one side of the fold than the other.
what is an overfold
When compression from one side is much greater, one limb is pushed over the other limb.
what is a recumbent fold
s the compression continues, the folds eventually lie almost horizontally on top of one another
what is an overthrust fold
Finally, the compression force is so great that the
rock strata fracture (fault) and one limb is pushed up and over the other limb.
As a result, the strata are no longer continuous.
what are the periods of folding which affected the irish landscape
armorican and caledonian
how long ago was the caledonian orgenency
400 million ya
how long ago was the amorican oregency
250 million ya
why did the calendonian orgency take place
Took place when the North American and Eurasian plates collided.
why did the amoricann orgency take place
This fold mountain period occurred when the African and Eurasian plates collided.
what mountaisn did the caledonian orgency form
wicklow mountain
what period of orgency formed the muster ridge and valley
armorican valley
what direction do the caledonian mountaisn run
north east to south west
what is the oldest ,mountains
caledonian
what kind of rock formed duting the caledonian period
magma intrused cracks in fold and cooled slowly to form igenous rocks
it also cam ein contact with sedimentary rock changing it into metamorphic rock eg marble and quartz
did metamorhpic rock from the caledonaian period from a protetcive cap on some mountains?
yes, it formed a protetcive cap on the sugarloaf in co wicklow and croagh patrick in co mayo
what are the oldest mountain in ireland and what kind of height are they
caledonian and they are the smallest now around 600-700m due to weathering and erosion
they were once 4,000m
what places are caledonian mountains found that arent in ireland
scottish highlands, greenland an dnorth america
