A

accounts for 17% of UK’s carbon footprint, transportation (particularly perishable food imported by air), production, processing and packaging

Give some examples of how farming has become a large business

A

‘Agribusiness’, mechanisation of farming means it’s quicker and needs fewer workers, removal of hedgerows for larger fields, technology and chemicals

Why do we need food? (Be more specific than you think you need to be)

A

men need approx. 2500 calories and women need approx. 2000 daily. Food is essential for children’s’ development, without food, we can’t perform everyday tasks, malnourishment leads to an increased risk of disease (1/3 of children under five globally die from diseases linked to malnourishment)

What can be done to ensure we have healthier food and less food miles?

A

organic food means it’s higher quality (but more expensive), local food such as farmers markets, farm shops and veg boxes are popular ways to reduce food miles
