food chains and food webs Flashcards
(5 cards)
what is a food chain
A succession of living organisms laid out in a way each plant or animal is eaten by the next one, each food chain link represents a trophic level there are two main trophic levels in grazing food chains producers and consumers
what are the producers
it refers to plants capable of photosynthesis and producing organic matter (energy) they are at the bottom of food chains
what are the consumers
it refers to animals feeding on organic matter we distinguished:
level 1: herbivorous animals animals feeding on producers (plants)
level 2: carnivorous animals feeding on herbivorous ones
level 3 or above: carnivorous animals feeding on carnivorous ones they are at the top of food chains
what’s the other trophic level
There is another trophic level called decomposers it consists of bacteria decomposing the organic matter into mineral matter
what are the food webs?
Refers to multiple interconnected food chains, it means that one Predator can feed on many preys in another way one prey can be eaten by many predators as for food chains, energy and biomass (organic matter) flow within food waste
