interactions between living organisms Flashcards
(7 cards)
give examples of some trophic levels
Parasitism
predation
commensalism
cooperation
symbiosis
competition
Amensalism
explain Parasitism and give an example
One organism (the parasite) benefits at the expense of the other (the host). it’s harmful for the host but the parasite can’t survive without it
Example: A tick feeding on a dog’s blood.
explain Predation and give an example
One organism (the predator) hunts and kills another (the prey) for food. it’s harmful for the prey but the predator can’t survive without it
Example: A lion hunting a zebra.
explain Commensalism and give an example
One organism benefits, while the other is neither helped or harmed.
Example: Barnacles on a whale.
explain Cooperation and give an example
Two organisms of the same species help each other for mutual benefit.
Example: Wolves hunting in packs.
explain Competition and give an example
Organisms compete for the same resources (food, water, space, mates). it’s harmful for both when they are together and beneficial when they are separated
explain Amensalism and give an example
One organism is harmed, while the other remains unaffected.
Example: A tree shading out smaller plants below it.
