food - human Flashcards
(22 cards)
what is food insecurity?
where there is a lack of access to safe nutritious food
what is malnutrition?
Poor nutrition as a result of an imbalanced diet, lacking in essential nutrients to maintain a healthy body
what is food surplus?
an area where food production is higher than local demand, leading to an excess supply of food
what is Food deficit?
an area where low quantities of food production can’t keep up with local demand, leading to a shortfall in food supplies
what is crop yield?
The amount of healthy crops grown and harvested in relation to the amount of seeds sown into the ground
what can impact food production?
climate
natural hazards
money
location
war and conflict
what is commercial farming?
The growing of crops or rearing of livestock to make a profit
common in most countries
what is subsistence farming?
there is just sufficient food produced to provide for the farmers own family
what is arable farming?
involves the growing of crops
what is pastoral farming?
involves the rearing of livestock
what is mixed farming?
involves a combination of arable and pastoral farming
what is intensive farming?
where the farm size is small in comparison with the large amount of labour and imports of capital, fertilisers, etc which are required
what is extensive farming?
where the size of a farm is very large in comparison to the imports of money, labour, etc needed.
what is agribusiness?
involves a large corporate organisation of farming - often farms are run for profit maximisation and economy of scale
What is the system of agriculture?
inputs
processes
outputs
feedback
what are inputs in agriculture?
determine the type of farming in an area
physical inputs - land, soil, climate, water
human inputs - labour, capital, machinery, fertiliser, knowledge
what are processes in agriculture?
activities carried out to turn inputs into outputs & they depend on the level of tech available
eg - milking, seedling harvesting, ploughing, fertilising
what are outputs of agriculture?
positive outputs - milk, meat, eggs, wool, money
negative outputs - soil erosion, water pollution, death
what is feedback from agriculture?
profits, manure, animal feed, seeds, knowledge
what is agricultural productivity?
Measure of economic performance
shows efficiency in use of resources & turns them into profitable or useful outputs
measured in yields
measurement of productivity = total product activity
what are the impacts climate change is expected to have on agriculture?
cause floods, droughts & more frequent and intense weather events
increase in temperature - changes to crop growing seasons & can reduce crop yields
rise in sea levels & change in rainfall pattern causes floods which destroys crops
what are adaptations to deal with impacts of climate change on agriculture?
climate change adaptation projects - test technologies and strategies for sustainable livelihood security in rural communities that are vulnerable to climate risks
heat stress tolerance for varieties of wheat introduced - increasing yields
