Force And Work Flashcards
(20 cards)
What is force
Force is something that causes an object to accelerate
How do you measure force
The unit of force is Newtons = N
1N = weight of an apple
Newton meter
What the effect of push
Moves or increases speed or changes direction e.g. Pushing a child on a swing
What’s the effect of pull
Causes movement such as speed and change in direction e.g. Pulling open a door
What’s the effect of weight
Moves objects towards the centre of the earth e.g. A ball falling
What’s the effect of friction
Slows objects moving over each other e.g. Brakes on a bicycle
What’s the effect of tension
Moves objects on pulleys or stops a body falling e.g. A light suspended from a ceiling
What’s the effect of reaction
Supports or balances weight e.g. A book resting on a table
What’s the effect of stretching
Changes shape of object e.g. Stretching an elastic band
What’s the effect of twisting
Causes rotation e.g. Opening a screw cap on a bottle
What’s the effect of compression
Changes shape of object e.g. Sitting on a cushion
What’s the effect of magnetism
Moves magnetic materials e.g. Picking up iron in a scrap yard
What’s the effect of electricity
Moves charged particles e.g. Positive charge attracting negative
What is the weight of an object
The weight of an object is the force of gravity on it
What is friction
Friction is a force which opposes motion between two objects in contact
Name 2 disadvantages and advantages of friction
Disadvantages 1) slows things down 2) waste of energy Advantages 1) brakes on cars 2) picking up things with our hands
What is hooks law
The extension of a spring is directly proportional to the force that is stretching it
How to measure work
Force X distance moved
Newtons - force
Metres - distance moved
Joules - work done
What is energy
The ability to do work
Joules (j)
What is power
Work done per unit time
Watt - W
