what does magnitude mean?
magnitude means size
Scalar quantities do not have a what?
Scalar quantities do not have a direction
e.g of vector quantities
displacement
weight
force
velocity
acceleration
momentum
vector quantities have both magnitude and direction
true
what can we represent vectors as?
we can represent vectors using arrows
What is force?
A force is just a push or a pull on an object
what’s force measured in?
Force is measured in newtons(N)
What can force do?
Force can change an object’s speed, direction, or shape.
types of forces
Gravity
Friction
Air Resistance
Tension
Magnetic
Upthrust
Electrostatic
what happens if forces are unbalanced
Object accelerates, decelerates, or changes direction.
3 Newton’s Laws of Motion
1st Law (Inertia)
2nd Law (F = ma)
3rd Law (Action & Reaction)
what happens in 1st Law (Inertia)
Objects that stay still or keep moving unless a force acts on them.
e.g A car keeps moving unless friction or brakes stop it.
what happens in 2nd Law (F = ma)
Force = Mass × Acceleration
F=m×a
More force = more acceleration (F = ma).
If force increases, acceleration increases.
3rd Law (Action & Reaction)
Every action has an equal and opposite reaction (e.g., pushing on a wall, it pushes back)
example: When you push on a wall, it pushes back with equal force.
what acceleration
The rate at which velocity changes.
Mass (kg)
The amount of matter in an object.
what’s Weight (N)
Weight (N) is Force due to gravity.
what happens if If forces are balanced
If forces are balanced → No change in motion.
formula for wight
W=m×g
e.g Example 1: A 5 kg object.
What’s g = Gravitational field strength
On Earth=10N/kg (approximately).
How to calculate speed?
Speed = Distance ÷ Time
v= d÷t
how to calculate acceleration?
Acceleration = Change in velocity ÷ Time
a= t÷Δv
what happens if an object falls freely?
It accelerates at at 10 m/s² due to gravity.
