Forces Flashcards
(18 cards)
What are scalar and vector numbers?
Scalar- Tell you how much there is
Vector- Tell you that they go in a direction
Speed=
Distance ÷ Time
S D T
On a distance/time graph, What does a straight line mean?
It has stopped
Acceleration =
Change in velocity ÷ time
A V-U T
On a velocity/time graph, what does a straight line mean?
A constant speed
Resultant force =
Big force - Smaller force
Which direction does the resultant force go in?
The direction of the larger force
Force =
Mass x Acceleration
M F A
Momentum (P) =
Mass x Velocity
M P V
Velocity =
Distance travelled ÷ time taken
Weight =
Mass x Acceleration (gravity)
What happens during a collision?
A transfer of momentum
Individual momentum changes, total does not
Conservation of momentum
Why do car safety features help?
They lengthen the time it takes to change momentum so the person has more time to cope with change and thus experiences a smaller force
What is the thinking distance?
How far a car goes as the driver reacts to danger
What is the breaking distance?
How far the car goes as breaks have been applied
What is total stopping distance?
Thinking distance + Breaking distance
What is thinking distance affected by?
Speed and concentration
What is the breaking distance affected by?
Physical things about the car & road (Eg: Wet and icy roads reduce friction, car takes longer to stop/bad tyres with no grip bd increases)
