Waves Flashcards
(23 cards)
What is a wave?
How energy moves from one place to another
Name the 2 types of waves
Longitudinal and transverse
What is oscillating?
Moving in the same way repeatedly
What is a longitudinal wave?
A wave in which the vibrations that make up the wave move backwards and forwards as the wave itself moves along
What is a transverse wave?
A wave in which the vibrations that make up the wave move up and down as the wave itself moves along
Give 2 examples of a longitudinal wave
Sound waves, P waves
Give 2 examples of a transverse wave
Light waves, S waves
What is frequency measured in?
Hertz (Hz) or number of waves per second
The closer the waves…
the higher the sound
The lower the waves..
the quieter the sound
What is the speed of sound (in air)
330 m/s
What is the speed of light (in space & air)
3000,000,000 m/s
Speed =
distance ÷ time
Wavespeed =
frequency x wavelength
Ray of light going into a mirror =
incident ray
Ray of light coming out from a mirror =
reflected ray
The reflected angle is equal to…
the incident angle
A single ray of light is reflected..
specular reflection
multiple rays of light are reflected
diffuse reflection
When light goes into something that is denser than air, it is _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ towards the _ _ _ _ _ _ line
refracted, normal
When light goes through something less dense than air, it is refracted away from the ? line
normal
If light goes in/comes out of something at an angle..
it will change direction
What is ultrasound?
a soundwave which you can’t hear
