Q

What was the Treaty of Windsor?

A

When Juana landed in England during the succession struggle in Spain, Henry imposed upon her the Treaty of Windsor. This returned Edmund de la Pole to England, and proposed the marriage of Henry VII and Archduchess Margaret, sister of Philip of Burgundy, following the death of Elizabeth of York. This did not occur. Philip of burgundy’s death enabled Ferdinand to label Juana as deranged and assume the post of Regent of Castile in 1507, which diplomatically isolated Henry.

Q

What was the Medina Del Campo?

A

The Medina Del Campo, signed with Spain in 1489 comprised a pledge of mutual protection in the event of an attack and vowed not to harbour rebels. It devised the marriage of Arthur, Prince of Wales, and Catherine, Princess of Aragon. Ferdinand refused to embrace the marriage whilst Henry II’s stability was imperilled by Warbeck, and Catherine’s dowry incited dispute. The marriage occurred in 1501, yet Arthur’s death 1502 provoked further discord, as Henry promoted the marriage Catherine and Henry VIII, but Ferdinand repudiated: this would require papal dispensation and an Anglo-Spanish alliance was unnecessary.
