Formula & Equations Flashcards
(12 cards)
What is an element?
A substance consisting of one type of atom.
What is an ionic compound?
Compounds expressed using the ions that make up the compound. Overall, they have a neutral charge.
What is an simple compound?
A substance consisting of two or more types of atom chemically bound together. These can be represented in a dot and cross diagram.
What is an oxidation number?
A number assigned to an atom or an ion which represents how many electrons have been lost or gained by the atom. It is a hypothetical charge that describes an atoms degree of oxidation in a compound.
What is the oxidation number of an neutral compound?
0
What is the oxidation number of an element?
0
What is the oxidation number of an charged compound?
The sum of the ocidation numbers in a charged compound is equal to the total charge.
What is the oxidation state of oxygen
-2 (unless in an peroxide and F2O where it is -1)
What is the oxidation state of hydrogen?
+1 (unless in a metal hydride where it is -1)
What is the oxidation state of group 1 metals?
+1
What is the oxidation state of halogens?
-1
What is an ionic equation?
Used to draw attention to the particles/ions that are direcrtly involved in a reaction.
