Fossil Fuels Flashcards
(22 cards)
Natural Resource
Any natural material that is used by humans such as water, petroleum, minerals, forests, and animals.
Renewable Resource
A natural resource that can be replaced at the same rate at which the resource is consumed.
Non renewable Resource
A resource that is found in the middle of the earth and takes over a million years to from.
Fossil Fuel
a natural fuel such as coal or gas, formed in the geological past from the remains of living organisms.
Nuclear Fission
a nuclear reaction in which a heavy nucleus splits spontaneously or on impact with another particle, with the release of energy.
Nuclear Fusion
a nuclear reaction in which atomic nuclei of low atomic number fuse to form a heavier nucleus with the release of energy.
Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicle
a type of alternative fuel vehicle that uses hydrogen and oxygen from the air to electrochemically produce electricity in fuel cells, powering its on-board electric motor.
Solar Energy
radiant energy emitted by the sun.
Wind Energy
electrical energy obtained from harnessing the wind with windmills or wind turbines.
Hydroelectric Energy
a form of renewable energy that uses the water stored in dams, as well as flowing in rivers to create electricity in hydropower plants.
Biomass
the total quantity or weight of organisms in a given area or volume.
Gasohol
a mixture of gasoline and ethyl alcohol used as fuel in internal combustion engines.
Geothermal Energy
heat energy from the earth
Petroleum
a liquid mixture of hydrocarbons that is present in certain rock strata and can be extracted and refined to produce fuels including gasoline, kerosene, and diesel oil; oil.
Natural Gas
a fossil energy source that formed deep beneath the earth’s surface
Coal
a sedimentary deposit composed predominantly of carbon that is readily combustible
Propane
Propane is one of a group of liquefied petroleum gases
Tidal Energy
a form of power produced by the natural rise and fall of tides caused by the gravitational interaction between Earth, the sun, and the moon
Wave Energy
a form of renewable energy that can be utilized from the motion of the waves
Smog
fog or haze combined with smoke and other atmospheric pollutants.
Acid Precipitation
any form of precipitation with acidic components, such as sulfuric or nitric acid that fall to the ground from the atmosphere in wet or dry forms.
Recycling
recovery and reprocessing of waste materials for use in new products
