Fossils are formed when an organism is buried in soft material like clay

Clay later hardens around it and the organism decays leaving a cast

Things like footprints can also be pressed into these materials leaving by impressions

From preservations in places where no decay happens

In amber and tar pits theres no oxygen or moisture so decay microbes cant survive
In glaciers its too cold
Peat bogs are too acidic

Why do we not know how life began

Many early forms of life were soft bodies and soft tissue tends to decay away completely
