The Chassepot was a breech-loading bolt action rifle. It could hit targets of up to 1500 metres.
Why were the French not used to using this gun?
It was just introduced to replace the muzzle-loaded muskets that they have used for a long time.
What was the French artillery type and in what way was it worse than the Prussian artillery?
The French artillery was a muzzle-loader and had much less range and longer reload time than their Prussian counterparts.
What was France’s secret weapon and what were its advantages and disadvantages?
The French possessed a precursor to the Maxim machine gun, the Mitrailleuse. The Mitrailleuse could unleash significant, concentrated firepower but lacked range and was comparatively immobile, and thus prone to being easily overrun.
