Contrast between scrooge and fred -
Fred; ‘A merry christmas uncle!..
God save you!’
Dickens use of exclamations emphasizes fred’s generosity of spirit towards his uncle and to christmas.
Dickens also reminds us of the importance of god when fred blesses scrooge.
Contrasts between scrooge and fred;
Scrooges quite ‘Bah!..
Humbug!’
reveals a misanthropic cynical attitude.
The use of this and Fred’s exclamation heightens differences between the two foils and emphasizes scrooges lack of good will.
How does dickens develop contrasts between scrooge and fred through heat imagery?
Fred is assosciated with warmth - ‘ he had so heated himself with rapid walking’ ‘all in a glow’
He also emits a metaphorical warmth to those around him.
Scrooge is associated with coldness - ‘He carried his own low temperature always about with him’
With this contrasting imagery, it convinced the reader to ms comparisons between the two men and to judge fred as the better man.
Fred’s quote; listing of him regarding christmas as a
‘kind, forgiving, charitable….
pleasant time’
asyndetic listing (no conjunctions) speeds up the pase and draws readers attention to the adjectives which all have a positive christian connotation , aligning fred with goodness.
makes the reader aware that scrooges isolation is through his own choice and free will - not imposed on him by members of his family.
How does dickens use mirroring as a technique to illustrate fred’s character in relation to his mother and scrooge?
Fred insists on inviting scrooge for christmas dinner, when he visits his uncle to deliver seasons greetings .
This mirrors the actions of fred’s mum, fan, who picked scrooge up from school when he was young.
Shows potential for scrooge to have positive loving relationships with his family but he had chosen a more selfish path,
At his christmas party, he expresses his determination to welcome scrooge back into the family if he changes mind,
‘I mean to give him the same chance every year, whether,.
he liked it or not, for I pity him’
He may be entitled to feel irritated with scrooges repeated rejections, but he is stubborn in his refusal to give up on his uncle.
Symbolizes christian idea of hope and people can be saved and become better people.
