Jacob Marley Flashcards
(9 cards)
When does he appear?
First ghost to appear to scrooge.
The quote at the start ‘Marley was dead to begin with’ creates a shock for the reader, and creates a supernatural atmosphere and anticipation.
‘You will be haunted..
By three spirits’
marley’s visit makes the upcoming structure clear by appearance of each ghost,
Marley’s face on the door knocker.
Foreshadows arrival of marley’s ghost later the evening.
Listing describing marley’s chains
made of ‘cash boxes, keys, padlocks, ledgers..
deeds and heavy purses.’
All related to money and business.
Symbolizes his greed during his life.
‘I wear the chain i..
forged in life.’
Hints at religious reasons for marley’s torment. ‘I am doomed to wander through the world’
References catholic belief in purgatory, a place where evil souls of dead endure suffering before they’re purified and go to heaven. - Doomed shows he has no hope of going there.
Alliteration between ‘wander’ and ‘world’ slows down the sentence, almost slowing down time to emphasise the eternal time of his punishment,
‘Mankind,,
was by business.’
Scrooge had just used the world business.
Tells scrooge (and reader) that looking after eachother should be everyone’s no1 priority,
Who was the ‘sole mourner’ at marley’s funeral?
Scrooge,
Solitary, shows they were only concerned with their own profits, not their relationship with others.
echoes scrooges simile ‘as solitary as an oyster.’, however shows no hope for change / redemption for marley, serving a lesson to the reader: don’t be like marley and scrooge, focusing on self gain.
How does Scrooge use marley as a mouthpiece?
Emphasise importance of social responsibility and need to look after everyone
Using imagery of purgatory, it shows he is saying that it is the christian duty of his readers to help others.
He says to scrooge..
‘Shun the
path i tread’
makes reader realise that the story isn’t just about scrooge, but about a certain type of man - greedy, capitalist, beliefs in malthusian economic theories
