Free Will Vs Determinism Flashcards

(11 cards)

1
Q

Free will

A

Suggests humans have free will to chooose behaviours thoughts and actions

May be external/internal forces that can impact this choice

Free will believes we have ability to reject these preasures and self determine our own reality

Q

Determinism

A

Argued all behaviours is controlled and caused by external and internal factors and induviduals have no free will over their behaviour

Q

Hard determinism

A

All behaviour is a result of external and internal causes

Free will does not play a role so induviduals do not have any choice in the behaviour they display

E.g ocd is cuases by inheritance of mutated SERT gene

Q

Soft determinism

A

All behaviour is a result of internal or external cuases yet we also have the ability to make conscious decision

E.g social learning theory we learn behaviour through observing model

However thought process must play a role as whether or not we identity someone as a model

Q

Biological determinism

A

Human behaviour is caused by biological factors such as genetics evoulution and hormones

Link to psych

Addiction to substance/behaviour can be encouraged through lower levels of D2 receptors

Q

Environmental determinism

A

Behaviour is controlled by external factors e.g parents , society , school , peers , upbringing

Link to pysch

Infants learn to attach to their caregiver via stimulus , response association with food provided

Q

Pychic determinism

A

Human behaviour is controlled by unconscious conflict within mind which have been repressed from early childhoood

E.g anxious personality could be caused by and over active super ego

Q

Scientific emphasis on causal explanation

A

Conducting deterministic a research improves scientific status and follows scientific enquiry

Because we can conduct highly controlled experiment , ensuring high control over extraneous variables

So we are certain IV has impacted the DV

Allowing psychologists to establish cause and effect to discover what external internal factors drive our behaviour

Leading to development of psychological treatments or interventions

Q

Concepts of determinism highly scientific Ao3

A

Because possible to predict behaviour control and treat

Leads to prac apps if we know cuase of abnormal behaviour then easy for us to develop treatments

E.g unlikely anyone in society would choose to have sz

Thus using deterministic stance lead to drugs being developed to help help decrease dophamine activity

Thus reduce positive symptoms of sz e.g hallucinations.

This means explaining human behaviour determinism can play important role in applied psychology

Q

Belief of self control and personal choice from perspective of free will can be seen as more positive stance than determinism Ao3

A

Allows people to believe they have chouce over behaviour

More positive affect on mental health

E.g those with internal locus of control believing they have high influence over own behaviour tend to be more mentally healthy , compared to those who believe lives are decided outside of there control

Suggest even if we do not have free will the fact we think we do may have positive impact on mind and behaviour

Q

Taking stance of determinism is inconsistent Ao3

A

With Idea self control and responsibility has implications for British legal system.

Hard determinism suggests all behaviour is a resault of internal and external factors and we have no choice in our behaviour

However in court of law offenders are condsidered morally accountable for actions

Suggest induvidual free will plays a role in whether or not someone commits a crime.

Thus this restricts use of determinism in real world when explaining people behaviour .
