Nature Vs Nuture Flashcards
(8 cards)
What is the nature nuture debate in psychology ?
Discusses whether human behaviour is due to nature genes or nuture the environment
Nature
Nativist psychologist believed importance of heredity
Idea human characteristics/behviour are innate passed from one generation to the next via genes
E.g Bowlbys monotropic theory state babies biologically programmed to form attatchment through behaviours like social releases help the to survive
Thus attachment is innate
Nuture
Empiricist argue mind is a blank slate at birth and bevhiour is shaped by environment, learning and experience
E.g behaviourist psychologist explain attatchment in terms of classical conditioning
Food UCS associated with the mother NS through repeaters paring mother become CS producing CR child pleasure
Thus attachment in learned behaviour
Thus the nature-nuture debate has changed in recent years-
Instead of trying to decide why here behaviour is due to nature nuture
Psychologist are more concerned with the relative contribution of each
Interactionist approach
Argued both genetic and environment play a part in human behaviour (diathesis stress model)
States genetics give predisposition to certain behaviours , however genetics are then influenced by the environment
E.g sz induvidual born with PCM1 gene which makes them more vunreble to sz but may not develop sz unless they experience steesseful life event
Ao3 nature limitation
Nature side of the debate cannot be a full explanation of human behviour
If genes were 100% sole cause of human behviour MZ twins whose share 100% of there genes should have 100% concordance rates
However not the case as biological explanation for sz concordance rate are only 48% so must be other factors that affect human such as the environment (nuture)
Important to consider both influences when explaining human behaviour
Ao3 interactionist (s)
More appropriate way of explaining human behviour may be interactionist approach
Argued genetics give predispituon to behviours and genetics are influenced by the environment
Tienari found that group of Finish adoptees more likely to develop sz had biological relative with Sz
And had dysfunctional relationships with adoptive families
Showing both side of the debate , nature and nuture , impacted on the likelihood and induvidual would develop sz
Supporting the idea of Interactionism
Futher adding the the idea the the environment and genes cannot be sepeartead is idea of constructionism
Ao3
Where induvidual created own nature by actively seeking environment appropriate re for there nature
E.g naturally aggressive children is likely to feel more comfortable around children who show simmiler bevhoirs
Thus complicates future attempt to determine if nature or nuture have a large impact on effective human behviour as the two combine
