What is the tithe?
one tenth of the annual, produce or earnings, formerly taken as tax for the support of the church /clergy.
What were the causes of the French Revolution?
• In Europe, many people in the 1700s were starting to think that royal rulers and the church should not hold all of the power.
• This became known as the Enlightment.
• These new ideas grew when thinkers called philosophers started to write books. They applied science and logic to the world’s problems.
• Many people started to think that they should change their government. They wanted to take power away from the monarchs and give it to the people.
Positive effects of the French Revolution (7)
- Spread ideas of freedom and equality across Europe.
- Abolished unfair taxes
- Many ordinary people gained the right to vote.
- Abolined the idea ‘of absolute monarchy’
- End of slavery in France (Napoleon reintroduced it later again)
- The declaration of the Rights of Man was writen.
- Influenced new ideas to develop like nationalism & communism.
Negative effects of the French Revolution (6)
- Took long time for people to actually benefit from feudalism disappearing, people were still very poor.
- Led to period of terror, where thosands were executed for not having enough enthusiasm
- Many people killed in France’s civil war
- Church lost land, but was bought by noble people, not ordinary.
- Women didn’t have equal rights in any point of the revolution.
- Took a lot of time for people to be treated equally.
