What is the Jacobin Club?

A

tarted as a dining club of Aristocrats from Brittany, but they changed and opened to others. (The Friends of the Constitution)

What is the Cordelier Club?

A

Cordeliers Club (The Society of the Friends of the Rights of Man) – this was from the the Franciscan convent. Expanding of democracy and equality, allowed women, thought about the idea of the republican idea vs. constitutional monarchy. Part of a group of clubs trying to open up to the masses and lower classes.

A

High levels of political involvement of both men and women; pamphlets, newspapers and such
One consequence is that political clubs pop up to debate what is the news, do we believe it, what should be done

What were the requirements to vote?

A

The constitution meant that only active citizen should be able to vote. Male that was over 25 and paid a certain amount of taxes equivalent to 3 days of work. Enfranchised about 60% of men over 25.

A

In order to be part of the political system, you had to have money and that went up as you the office went up

Why was it believed that the poor should not be in political office?

A

Common thought at the time:
Government ought to go to those wealthy enough to study the law and govern because you were not likely to be paid.
If you were independently wealthy, you were less likely to be corrupted by others
Those that were used to commanding others had an independent will

A

The ordinary clergy was upset about the aristocracy of the appointing of bishops
The money the church brought in was not used to help the poor, the churches or the priests
The church also did not want to give up its higher status over other religions

How did King Louis XVI respond to the demands of the clergy?

A

Louis talks to bishops because he didn’t’ know what to think. The bishops said that he should support it to avoid a schism. The pope’s letter comes after Louis agrees urging to stop it at all cost, but it was too late

A

June 20 the royal family left trying to get to the border at what is now luxemberg. They were stopped and brought back to Paris.

Why did some revolutionaries support a constitutional monarchy?

A

they decided that they needed King Louis XVI to avoid opening up to a new constitution where they may lose some of the status and the ideals would be skewed to the side of those too poor to be active citizens.

A

The Royal family was connected to Austria through Marie Antoinette. And so for the reinstitution of absolute monarchy. Austria and Prussia are asked to help and they decide they have a vested interest

A

He was elected in the new Convention. The war party forms around Brissot which promotes a preimptive war against the foreigners. They thought that it would restore the idea of France dominance. They also thought they would also force Louis to pick sides.

Louis picked the war option thinking that the Austrians and Germs would be too strong, they would win and put him back in power

A

The French army increases vastly. They needed food, clothing, transportation and they were met by price controls.
Carnot then institutes the idea of advancement by merit

A

September massacres led to the government decided that they needed something needed to be done to stop this. A tribunal is formed to try this cases and they were innocent until proven guilty.
