Fuels Flashcards
(13 cards)
Fuels
Substances that have chemical energy stored within them, which can easily be released, fuels provide us with energy
Fossil fuels
A natural fuel formed from the ancient plants and animals that were decomposed under the Earth’s surface over millions of years ago
Advantages of fossil fuels
- Cheap
- High purity
- Formed from fossilised remains of plants and animals.
Disadvantages of Fossil Fuels
- Non renewable
- Have a high carbon footprint.
- Takes millions of years to produce.
Coal
Type of fossil fuel made from Carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, sulfur
As wood turns into coal, chemical changes occur.
about 50% of carbon is in wood
carbon content is increased, hydrogen and oxygen content is decreased.
Natural Gas
Type of fossil fuel made from water, sulfur, nitrogen and carbon dioxide.
Deposited in the crust, mainly composed of methane
Creud oil
Mixture of hydrocarbons that are mainly alkanes
Biofuels
Fuels that can be made from bio-mass such as crops, wood or organic food material, created from living or recently dead materials
Advantages of Biofuels
- Replenished in a short time.
- renewable
- formed from biomaterial
- Lower carbon footprint
- more sustainable and eco friendly
Disadvantages of Biofuels
- Expensive
- Lower purity
- Slower production process (needs more refining)
Bioethanol
Type of biofuel, that is a type of alcohol made by fermenting sugars from plants, mainly used as fuels for cars.
Biogas
Made when bacteria breaks down waste material like food sraps, manure or sewage in places without oxygen
Biodiesel
Fuel made from natural oils and fats, like vegetable oils or animal fat.
It can power diesel engines.
