Function of the endocrine system Flashcards
(11 cards)
What does the endocrine system provide?
It provided a chemical system of communication within the bloodstream to regulate the activity of cells and organs in the body
Is the endocrine system slower or faster than the nervous system?
It is slower but its effects are more widespread and powerful.
What are the function of hormones?
They are chemical messengers which are circulated in the blood and control our cells/organs and influence behavior
What hormone does the pineal gland secrete?
Melatonin which is involved in regulating the sleep-wake cycle by making a person feel tired and therefore ready to sleep
What does the adrenal gland release
Adrenaline
What is adrenaline involved in?
It is involved in physiological changes in the fight or flight response such as increased blood flow to transport oxygen for rapid response planning
What is the function of the pituitary gland?
It secretes many different hormones that controls the functions of other glands
What glands do the pituitary gland control?
The ovaries and the testes
What hormones do the ovaries release?
FSH and LH which encourages the ovaries to release oestrogen and progesterone which regulate the female menstrual cycle
What do the testes release?
FSH and LH
What do FSH and LH do in the testes?
They encourage the testes to release testosterone which is involved in creating male characteristics and sperm production
