Functional Recovery Flashcards

1
Q

What is another example of neural plasticity?

A

The functional recovery that may occur in the brain after trauma is another example of neural plasticity- healthy brain areas take over functions of areas damaged or destroyed. Neuroscientists suggest this may take place quickly after trauma but then slow down.

Q

How is the brain able to reorganise itself?

A

The brain is able to reorganise itself by forming new synaptic connections close to the area of damage. Secondary neural pathways that would not typically be used are unmasked to enable functioning to continue.

Q

What may further structural changes include?

A

Further structural changes may include axonal sprouting which is the growth of new nerve endings which connect with other undamaged cells to form new neuronal pathways.
