Functions Of Skeletal System Flashcards
(6 cards)
Support
Skeletal system provides framework to support muscles and vital organs. This is essential in long distance runs as they work together to provide oxygen to working muscles.
Movement
Bones provide a surface for muscles to attach to via tendons which provides rigid structures to create levers . This is essential in all activities, a sporting example would be the bicep muscle attached to the radius and ulna by a tendon. When the muscle contracts the elbow flexes.
Posture
The skeletal system creates posture which allows the body to stay upright and to hold the correct shape and posture. Posture allows arms and legs to move freely and therefore take part in sporting activities
Protection
The skeletal system protects the vital organs such as the cranium protecting the brain. This is essential in football when the player heads the ball as without the cranium serious health problems can occur.
Blood Cell Production
Red blood cells, White blood cells and platelets are produced in the bone marrow in larger bones. Red blood cells are essential for carrying oxygen around the body. White blood cells fight off disease and platelets help blood clot after injury.
Storage Of Minerals
Calcium and Phosphorus are stored in the bones. These are essential for vital body functions, strong bones and teeth. Calcium is also used for muscular contractions.
