Fungi Flashcards
(31 cards)
name three fungi
mould, mushrooms, yeast
Are fungi heterotrophs or autotrophs?
heterotrophs
What are heterotrophs?
organisms that take in nutrients from other sources
What are mould and mushroom’s bodies composed of?
Mycelium
What does mycelium contain?
Hyphae
What does hyphae act as?
roots
What do hyphae do?
they attach to the food source and take its nutrients
What is the biggest organism ever discovered?
Mushrooms
How does fungi live?
by decomposing plant remains and taking up their nutrients
what are decomposers?
organisms that break down other organisms to live
What is at the end of the mycelium?
Sporangia
What does a sporangia contain?
spores
What are the spores distributed by?
the wind, and start to grow new mycelium
How does mould reproduce?
similarly, but moulds make spores directly from the mycelium
how does yeast reproduce?
by budding
What is budding?
A section of the cell swelling up and a new cell is made from there
How do fungi extract nutrients efficiently?
By breaking down (decaying) their damp surrounding
name two diseases in humans caused by fungi
athlete’s foot, ringworm
What is fermentation?
the breakdown of sugars into acetic acid & alcohol
What type of respiration do humans do?
aerobic respiration
What does aerobic respiration require?
oxygen
What type of respiration does yeast do?
anaerobic respiration
What is yeast fed?
malt (a carbohydrate)
What is malt made from?
wheat/ barley
