Gas exchange Flashcards
(48 cards)
Where is energy produced in a cell
Mitochondria
How does mitochondria make energy
Energy is produced through respiration
Glucose is used to release energy
What does respiration do
Transfers food into energy
What gas do you breathe out
Carbon dioxide
What gas do you breathe in
Oxygen
Where does glucose come from
Digested carbohydrates
Respiration word equation
Glucose + oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water (+ energy)
When energy is released it is called
Aerobic respiration
What is respiration similar to
Combustion- burning fuels
What reacts in combustion
Fuel and oxygen
Combustion word equation
Fuel + oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water
What is released in combustion
Heat and light energy and carbon dioxide and water
Trachea
Transports air into bronchi from mouth and nose - hard as it is made of rings of cartilage
Bronchus
Transports air from the trachea to the alveoli they are smaller versions of the trachea
Bronchioles
Lots of smaller branches off the bronchus connecting to the alveoli
Alveoli
Tiny air sacks where gas exchange occurs they fill with air when we breathe in
Diaphragm
Contracts to move the rib cage it’s found beneath the lungs
Mouth
Where you inhale through
First part of gas exchange
Oxygen O2 is picked up by red blood cells this is called oxygenated blood when you inhale
2nd part of gas exchange
Oxygenated blood pumped around the body to the cells in our tissues
3rd part of gas exchange
Cells in the tissue use the O2 in the blood and is now deoxygenated blood
4th part of gas exchange
Cells of the tissue produce waste carbon dioxide- CO2
5th part of gas exchange
The carbon dioxide is removed from the blood in the lungs when you breathe out and the cycle restarts
How are alveoli adapted to make gas exchange more efficient
Thin moist walls - one cell thick
Give the lung a large surface area
Lots of tiny blood vessels called carpillaries
